CIDR & Subnetting Explained

What is CIDR?

CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) is a method for allocating IP addresses and routing IP packets. It replaced the old classful network architecture (Class A, B, C) with a flexible prefix-length system.

CIDR Notation

Written as an IP address followed by a slash and a number (e.g., 192.168.1.0/24). The number after the slash is the prefix length, indicating how many bits are used for the network portion.

Network vs Host Bits

An IPv4 address is 32 bits. The prefix length divides these into network bits (identify the network) and host bits (identify devices on that network). For /24, the first 24 bits are network, the last 8 bits are host.

Subnet Mask

The subnet mask is a 32-bit number where network bits are set to 1 and host bits to 0. For /24, the mask is 255.255.255.0.

Network Address

The first address in a subnet where all host bits are 0. Used to identify the network itself and cannot be assigned to a device.

Broadcast Address

The last address in a subnet where all host bits are 1. Used to send packets to all devices on the network and cannot be assigned to a device.

Usable Hosts

The addresses between the network and broadcast addresses that can be assigned to devices. Calculated as 2^(32-prefix) - 2.

Wildcard Mask

The inverse of the subnet mask. Network bits are 0, host bits are 1. Used in ACLs and routing protocols like OSPF.
